Avarni has three checks with similar names that answer different questions. Knowing which is which saves confusion.
Check | Question it answers |
Completeness screen | Has data arrived for every site, every source, every month? |
Invoice completeness check | Did we capture every line on this particular bill? |
Completeness Check on the Chart of Accounts | Does the general ledger we loaded account for every movement in the trial balances? |
The first is about your activity data across the year. The second is about one document. The third is about your general ledger.
The Completeness screen
Found under Completeness. It compares the days covered by your activity data against the days each facility was open, by site, by emission source, by month.
Use it to find the gaps in your year. See Completeness: what it checks and how to read it.
The invoice completeness check
Found in Import Review, on each uploaded bill. It compares the line items Avarni extracted against the total on the invoice.
A nil variance means every line was captured. A variance means something was missed or something was counted that should not have been.
Variance | Usual cause |
Extracted total is short | A line item, credit, payment or tax the extraction missed |
Extracted total is over | A subtotal or total read as a line item |
Variance equals the GST | The line items are GST-exclusive and the invoice total is not |
The third is common and not an error. Avarni flags it as a GST basis difference rather than a problem.
Correcting an invoice total
If Avarni read the wrong total, set it yourself using Set invoice total. Use Reset to extracted to go back.
The check uses the amount due less any balance brought forward, so a bill showing both a previous balance and current charges is measured against the current charges.
The ledger completeness check
Found under Chart of Accounts, by switching the view to Completeness Check. You pick an opening and a closing trial balance, and for every account Avarni checks that the opening balance plus the ledger transactions between the two dates equals the closing balance.
Use it to find out whether your general ledger extract is missing transactions before you rely on your Scope 3 spend. See Check your general ledger is complete against your trial balances.
What none of the checks does
None of them compares your invoices against your general ledger.
If you want to know whether the electricity bills you uploaded account for all the electricity spend in your accounts, that is a manual comparison today. Export the invoice data from the Emissions Hub and compare it against the relevant accounts in your general ledger.
Completeness is not the same as accuracy
A month showing complete means data arrived for every day. It does not mean the data is right.
A site with a meter reading for every month and the wrong factor applied shows as complete. Check your numbers separately. See Sense-check your numbers before you report.
