A Method decides how your uploaded data becomes emissions. It sets the scope and GHG category, and it assigns an emission factor to each row.
Methods sit under Imported Data.
How do I create a Method?
Go to Imported Data.
Select Create New Method.
Enter a Name.
Select Create new method.
A new Method is not empty. Avarni copies a default Method into it, which you then adjust.
What can I do on the Methods list?
Go to Imported Data and select the Methods tab. Each row shows the Method's name, its description and the date of its last update. The date changes each time someone saves the Method.
To do this | Do this |
Find a Method | Type part of its name in the search box. The search ignores upper and lower case. |
Open a Method | Select its name, or the arrow at the end of the row. |
Start an import with the Method | Select Import, then Spreadsheet or PDFs and Images. |
Copy a Method | Select the copy icon. |
Delete a Method | Select the bin icon, then confirm. |
The list shows up to 100 Methods, with the most recently updated first. To find a Method that is not shown, search for it by name.
When you delete a Method, data you already imported with it does not change. You cannot archive or disable a Method.
The Admin and User roles can create, edit, copy and delete Methods. The Viewer role can open a Method but cannot save changes.
How do I change a Method's name or description?
Open the Method.
Select the Method name at the top of the page.
In About this method, change the Name or the Description.
Select Save in the dialog.
The dialog saves the name and description at once. It does not wait for the Method's own Save button.
What do I set on the Calculation type tab?
Set what the Method produces:
The scope: Scope 1, Scope 2 or Scope 3.
Select GHG Category. If you choose Auto-select, also set Select Fallback GHG Category for rows whose matched factor has no category.
Unit type (optional). Type a unit such as kWh, L or AUD to filter the list, then select the unit type. Your file can contain any number of units of that same type.
Allowed Date Range.
For spreadsheet uploads, Avarni sends the date range to the upload template, which checks the date on each row against it. The Method itself does not expire.
If you change the year at either end of the date range, or change the Unit type, Avarni resets the Year mappings on every Map Factors with AI branch to the defaults. Set the date range before you tune your branches.
Any change you made to a factor year, matching algorithm or fallback region is lost. If you choose Auto-select, Avarni also clears the GHG category filters on every branch.
What happens when I change the scope?
If the GHG category saved on the Method belongs to the new scope, Avarni selects it. If not, Avarni selects the first category of the new scope. Avarni also resets the fallback GHG category. Check both fields after you change the scope.
What does Auto-select do?
With Auto-select, each row takes the GHG category of the factor it matches. The fallback GHG category is for rows whose matched factor has no category.
Do I need to set a Unit type?
No. The Unit type is optional, but it changes how branches work:
With a Unit type, the Factor list on a Set Factor branch shows only factors of that type. A Map Factors with AI branch offers only factor sets for that type, and rows in a unit of another type get no factor.
Without a Unit type, each Set Factor branch needs an Input Unit condition. All units in that condition must be of one unit type. If not, the Factor list stays disabled.
Input Unit conditions offer only units of the Unit type.
What else does the date range control?
Each Map Factors with AI branch has one Year mappings row for each calendar year in the range.
A date in a branch condition must fall inside the range.
In the spreadsheet upload template, the Facility list shows only facilities that are valid for part of the range.
The date range has no maximum length.
How does the Factor Assignment tab work?
This tab holds your branches. Each branch has conditions and one action.
Branches run top to bottom, and the first branch whose conditions match a row wins. Later branches never see that row.
The labels on screen follow that order. The first branch reads "First, check if". Each branch after it reads "If above criteria aren't met, then check if:".
How do I add a branch?
Select Add Branch. The new branch appears at the bottom of the list, above the Fallback branch.
Select the edit icon on the branch and give it a Branch Name.
Add your conditions.
Select Done.
Select the branch card. In the right panel, under "Action for:", set the action.
Select Save.
Drag a branch card to move it. Avarni renumbers the branches when you drop it.
A new branch is named "New Branch". It starts with the condition Amount Equal 1000 and the action Map Factors with AI. Change the condition. If you do not, the branch catches only rows with an amount of exactly 1000.
How do I clone, rename or delete a branch?
Each branch card has three icons:
Edit branch opens the dialog for the name and the conditions.
Clone branch adds a copy, named "Copy of" and the branch name, directly below. The copy has the same conditions and action.
Delete branch removes the branch at once, with no confirmation. To get it back, leave the page without saving. This discards all unsaved changes.
Two branches can have the same name. Use different names so you can tell them apart.
You cannot turn a branch off. To stop a branch from catching rows, delete it or change its conditions.
How do conditions work?
Conditions sit in groups. Criteria inside a group join with AND. Groups join with OR. The branch runs if any group is satisfied.
Use Add Criteria to add a condition to a group, and Add Group to add an alternative set.
Use the Clone group icon to copy a group directly below it. Use Delete group or Delete criteria to remove one. Avarni hides Delete group when the branch has one group, and Delete criteria when the group has one criterion.
You can build conditions on Amount, Activity Class, Country, Date, Description, Location or Address, GHG Emission Category, Input Unit, Invoice Number, Utility Account Number, Utility Meter Number, Entity, Facility, Supplier Name and Scope.
Each active custom field in your organisation also appears in the Field list, above the built-in fields. Avarni treats custom fields as text. If you change the field, Avarni sets the operator back to Equal and clears the value.
Text conditions offer Equal, Not Equal, Contains, Not Contains, Contains Keyword, Not Contains Keyword, Contains Keywords, Not Contains Keywords, Is In, Is Not In, Is Empty, Is Not Empty, Starts With and Ends With. Number and date conditions offer the comparison operators.
These are Equal, Not Equal, Less Than, Less Than Or Equal, Greater Than and Greater Than Or Equal. GHG Emission Category, Input Unit, Country, Entity, Facility and Scope conditions offer Equal, Not Equal, Is In, Is Not In, Is Empty and Is Not Empty.
Text conditions ignore upper and lower case. For what each operator matches, see Troubleshoot a Method.
What values can a condition hold?
Text: up to 200 characters for each value. For Is In, Is Not In, Contains Keywords and Not Contains Keywords, type each value and press Enter. Avarni removes spaces at the start and end of each value.
Amount: a number. You can use a minus sign and a decimal point.
Date: a date inside the Method's date range.
GHG Emission Category: only categories of the Method's scope.
Input Unit: only units of the Method's Unit type.
Is Empty and Is Not Empty need no value.
What action can a branch take?
Each branch has one action. Two types are available:
Set Factor. You choose the factor and, if you want, set field values such as GHG category, entity, facility and custom fields. Leave a field empty and Avarni uses the value in your uploaded file.
Map Factors with AI. You choose a factor set and Avarni selects a factor per row.
You cannot type your own factor value into a Method. Add a custom factor first under Settings › Emission Factors, then select it here.
To exclude matching rows, choose a factor first, then set the status to Exclude. On a Set Factor branch, the status controls stay disabled until a factor is set. On a Map Factors with AI branch, they are always available.
For what each action and its fields do, see Branch actions: Set Factor, Set Field Values and Map Factors with AI.
What does the Fallback branch do?
One Fallback branch sits at the bottom, labelled "If none of the criteria are met, go here:". It catches every row no earlier branch matched.
You cannot delete, clone or move it, and you cannot add conditions to it. You can rename it with the edit icon. Set its action to whatever you want unmatched rows to receive.
How do I expand the builder to full screen?
Select the full screen icon ("Show full screen"). Select it again to go back ("Exit full screen").
What happens to changes I have not saved?
Changes stay on your screen only until you select Save. While there are unsaved changes, Avarni shows "You have unsaved changes."
Done in the branch dialog does not save. It only closes the dialog.
If you try to leave the page, Avarni asks you to confirm in an "Unsaved changes" dialog. If you leave, Avarni discards the changes.
If a required field is empty, Avarni shows "Form is invalid. Please fill in required fields." The tab with the problem turns red.
How do I save a Method?
Select Save. Each save stores the whole Method as a new revision. You cannot view or restore an earlier revision.
Avarni shows "Method Saved". If nothing changed, it shows "No changes made". If your role cannot edit Methods, Save is disabled. The name and description are not part of the revision.
Does saving change data I already imported?
No. A save applies only to imports that start after it. To keep the current setup before a large change, copy the Method first.
If Avarni shows "Failed to save method", or your imported data did not change, see Troubleshoot a Method.
How do I copy a Method?
Select the copy icon on a Method in the list. The copy stays in the same organisation.
The copy is named "Copy of" and the original name. It starts from the latest saved version of the original and has no earlier revisions.
What are the limits?
Method name: 120 characters.
Description: 500 characters.
Each text value in a condition: 200 characters.
