A Method changes only rows in imports that start after you save it. For how to build a Method, see Build and edit a Method. For what each action does, see Branch actions: Set Factor, Set Field Values and Map Factors with AI.
Why did my rows go to the wrong branch?
Avarni tests each row against the branches in order, from #1 down. The first branch whose conditions match takes the row. Later branches never see it. The Fallback branch takes every row that no branch matched.
Check these points:
Order. A broad branch above a narrow branch takes the narrow branch's rows. Drag the narrow branch above the broad one.
Group logic. All criteria in a group must match. Any one group can match. "Description Equal Diesel" and "Description Equal Petrol" in the same group can never both be true. Put them in separate groups, or use one Is In condition.
Default conditions. A new branch and a new criterion start as Amount Equal 1000. If you did not change it, the branch catches only rows with an amount of exactly 1000.
Timing. The import started before you saved the Method.
Why didn't my text condition match?
Text conditions ignore upper and lower case, so "diesel" matches "DIESEL". The operator decides the rest.
Operator | Matches when | Example with the value "LPG" |
Equal | The whole value is the same. | Matches "lpg". Does not match "LPG gas". |
Contains | The text is anywhere in the value, also inside a word. | Matches "LPG gas" and "AUTOLPG". |
Contains Keyword | The text is a whole word. Only a space, or the start or end of the value, separates words. | Matches "bottled LPG". Does not match "LPG," or "LPG-45". |
Contains Keywords | Any one of the listed keywords matches as a whole word. | With LPG and DIESEL: matches "bottled LPG" and "DIESEL 10ppm". |
Is In | The whole value equals one of the listed values. | With LPG and DIESEL: matches "lpg". Does not match "LPG gas". |
Starts With | The value starts with the text. | Matches "LPG 45kg". |
Ends With | The value ends with the text. | Matches "Bottled LPG". |
Also check these points:
Spaces count. "4103 765 432" does not equal "4103765432". Avarni removes spaces at the start and end of the values you type and of the text values in your file, but not spaces inside a value.
Contains takes one text. Contains with "diesel, petrol" looks for the exact text "diesel, petrol". To match any of several words, use Contains Keywords or Is In.
Blank cells. Is Empty matches a blank cell and a cell that holds only spaces. A blank Activity Class becomes "Other" at import, so Is Empty never matches it.
How do I match rows on an NMI, MIRN or account number?
Make sure the identifier is in its own field in your upload: the utility account number, the utility meter number, or a custom field such as "NMI" or "MIRN". See Custom fields: when you need one and how to set it up.
In the branch condition, choose that field in Field: Utility Account Number, Utility Meter Number or the custom field. Custom fields show at the top of the list.
Choose Is In and type each identifier. Press Enter after each one. For one identifier, Equal is enough.
Check that the identifiers in your file have the same format. Spaces and punctuation count. Upper and lower case do not.
For example, a branch for the gas at a Melbourne site could use MIRN Is In 5310123456, 5310123457.
Should I use one Method or several?
A Method has one scope, one GHG category setting, one Unit type (or none) and one date range. You choose one Method for each import. Use separate Methods for data that needs different settings. For example:
Electricity bills in kWh: a Scope 2 Method with an energy unit type.
Fuel card litres: a Scope 1 Method with a volume unit type.
Supplier spend in AUD: a Scope 3 Method with a currency unit type.
Within one Method:
A branch's GHG Category in Set Field Values can move rows to another category and scope. Use it on a Method with a fixed GHG category.
With a Unit type, rows in a unit of another type get no factor on a Map Factors with AI branch.
Without a Unit type, each Set Factor branch needs an Input Unit condition that fixes one unit type.
Do I need a new Method for each reporting year?
No. A Method does not expire, and the date range has no maximum. To cover a new year, extend the date range and select Save. When the end year changes, Avarni resets the Year mappings on every Map Factors with AI branch. Check them before you save.
To keep the old setup as it is, copy the Method and change the copy. The copy has no earlier revisions.
I changed my Method. Why didn't my imported data change?
Each import uses the Method as it was when the import started. A later save does not change rows already imported. You cannot re-run a completed import, and you cannot restore an earlier version of a Method.
Situation | What to do |
The import completed | Delete the import and upload the file again. See Fix data: re-uploading, duplicates and deleting. |
A spreadsheet import failed with an error | Select Retry import. The retry uses the latest saved Method. PDF and image imports have no Retry import. |
Only some rows need a change | Edit them in the Emissions Hub, one at a time or with bulk edit. See Emissions Hub: find, filter and export. |
Why weren't my rows excluded?
Exclude is a status, not a GHG category. Set it with the status buttons on the branch.
On a Set Factor branch, choose a factor before you select Exclude. The button stays disabled until then.
On a Map Factors with AI branch, Exclude applies only to rows the AI matches. Rows with no match stay unmapped.
An earlier branch caught the rows first. Move the exclude branch higher.
The import started before you saved the change.
Why did my AI matching results change after I changed the date range or unit type?
Avarni regenerates the Year mappings on every Map Factors with AI branch when you change a year of the date range or the Unit type. It also regenerates a branch's Year mappings when you change that branch's Factor set or GHG category filters. The defaults are the closest factor year, the first eligible region and Exact Match Else Fallback. Your own edits are lost.
If you choose Auto-select for the GHG category, Avarni also clears the GHG category filters on every branch. The AI can then choose any factor in the set.
To fix this, open each AI branch, check Year mappings and GHG category filters, then select Save.
Results can also change between imports:
Use saved mappings reuses factors from rows in earlier imports that you confirmed, flagged or excluded. Each row you review can change what the next import picks.
Avarni does not keep AI predictions between imports. Only saved mappings carry over.
Why did my import fail after I set a Facility on a branch?
At import, Avarni checks the Entity and Facility set on each Set Factor branch. If a check fails, the import stops with one of these errors:
"Provided FacilityId does not correspond to any facility in this organisation"
"Provided EntityId does not correspond to any reporting entity in this organisation"
"Provided EntityId is not the entity operating the provided FacilityId"
Open the branch and choose the Facility again, so that Avarni fills Entity from it. Select Save. Then, for a spreadsheet import, select Retry import on the failed import. For PDFs and images, upload the files again.
Why does Avarni say "Failed to save method"?
The message does not give the reason. Check these points:
Every branch has a Branch Name.
Every condition has a value, except Is Empty and Is Not Empty. A value of only spaces does not count.
Every Map Factors with AI branch has a Factor set.
The date range does not end before it starts.
No Factor year is later than the current year.
Also look for the message "Form is invalid. Please fill in required fields." and a tab that shows in red.
