Global warming potential converts each greenhouse gas into a carbon dioxide equivalent. Methane and nitrous oxide are converted using a factor from an IPCC assessment report.

Avarni supports AR4, AR5 and AR6, and uses AR6 unless you change it.

Where to set it

Settings › Global Warming Potential.

It is set once for your whole organisation. You cannot vary it by entity, by period or by report.

Which one to use

Use the version your reporting framework requires.

Framework

Version

ASRS and AASB S2

Follows the GHG Protocol, currently AR6

NGER

Check the current determination, which has used AR5

Your parent company

Whatever they consolidate on

If you report under more than one framework on different versions, you have a problem the platform cannot solve for you, because the setting is organisation-wide. Talk to your Avarni lead before you change it.

Changing it recalculates everything

When you change the version, Avarni recalculates all your historical and future emissions.

This takes several minutes. While it runs, the Overview shows your last calculated figures with a notice, and some results are briefly unavailable.

Do not change it during an audit, or in the week you are finalising a disclosure.

If you change it between years

Your prior year figures move, because they are recalculated on the new version.

That is usually what you want, since your comparative should be on the same basis as the current year. Record the change and its effect as a restatement. See Base year, rebaselining and restatements.

Refrigerants

Refrigerants are where the choice matters most. The gap between AR5 and AR6 is large for some refrigerant gases, so a site with significant refrigerant losses can move noticeably.
