Avarni has separate upload templates for different kinds of data. Each one asks for its own columns.

Download a blank template from inside the importer. Select the download link at the bottom left of the import window.

Required: account code, account name, account type.

Optional: alternate names, account currency, scope, category, justification.

Required: account code, balance.

Optional: account name.

Each file is one balance at one date. You choose the as-of date and the currency when you start the import, not in the file. Every account code must already be in your chart of accounts, and each may appear only once.

Required: account code, date, spend.

Optional: currency, description, country, invoice number, supplier name, entity, facility, and any custom fields you have set up.

Include a country column if your ledger covers more than one country. Without it, every row takes your organisation's country.

An account name column is not needed. Avarni takes the account name from your chart of accounts.

Required: amount, date, activity class, input unit, country.

Optional: description, GHG emission category, entity, facility, supplier name, invoice number, spend amount, spend currency, and your custom fields.

The columns change with the Method:

No. The Method sets the scope and the GHG category for every row. You can delete these columns from your file.

If you map a GHG emission category column, its value replaces the Method's category for that row. The value must be a category in the Method's scope. Rows with an empty cell follow the Method's settings.

Yes, with one limit: a Method has one scope. Put data for a different scope in a separate Method.

Rows of the same unit type. Use branches. Add a condition on a column that tells the rows apart, such as activity class or description. Give each branch its own factor. See Build and edit a Method.

Without an Input Unit condition, the factor field on that branch stays disabled. The Fallback branch has no conditions, so its factor field stays disabled in this set-up.

To leave some rows out, send them to a branch that sets the status to Exclude. You can also remove those rows from the file before you upload.

Required: name, year, input unit, and the CO2, CH4 and N2O factors.

Optional: description, scope, GHG category, region.

Enter factors in kilograms of each gas per unit, not tonnes.

Excel and CSV are accepted.

A survey answer upload takes up to 2000 rows. Split larger files.

Dates are safest as yyyy-mm-dd. A date such as 03/04/2026 is ambiguous and can be read as either March or April.

No. Avarni sets no row limit on a chart of accounts, trial balance, general ledger or Method upload.

The 2000-row limit applies only to survey answer uploads.

Avarni imports only the columns you map to a field. Any other column in your file is left out. It does not reach the Emissions Hub.

To keep an extra column, such as a site code or a supplier location, create a custom field first. The custom field then appears as a field you can map in the importer. See Custom fields: when you need one and how to set it up.

Column order in your file does not matter. You match each column to a field when you map.

The importer checks your file as you map the columns. It shows which rows and columns are wrong so you can correct them before the data lands.

If a row errors on the account code in a general ledger upload, the account is usually excluded from your chart of accounts. Select delete rows with errors and continue.

In a Method import, the input unit is required on every row. It must be a unit of the Method's unit type. The importer marks a blank cell, a 0 or an unrecognised unit as an error. Correct the cell, or remove the row before you continue.

In an activity upload (Import Data), choose a unit for the blank rows at the step Assign values to missing fields.

A Method with no Unit type accepts any unit, including Unknown. Avarni also stores Unknown when it cannot read the unit from an invoice. A row with the unit Unknown has zero emissions.

A row with the unit Unknown has zero emissions, so its activity is missing from your totals. Find and fix these rows in the Emissions Hub.

If a row is not a real activity, select the Exclude status on that row. When the table is grouped, the status controls on a group row apply to every row in that group.

To stop new Unknown rows, fix the unit in the source file. You can also set a Unit type on the Method, so that the importer checks each unit.

No. Method imports and activity uploads take activity data, not emissions totals. Enter a total you calculated yourself by hand in the Emissions Hub.
